Compost too dry: nothing is happening

Decomposition is done by living organisms — bacteria, fungi, worms, insects — and like most living things, they need water. When a heap dries out, those organisms slow down or go dormant, and the whole pile just sits there, looking pretty much the same week after week. This is one of the most common reasons a compost heap “stops working.”

The organisms doing the actual work of breaking down your compost live in the moisture film around every particle of material. When that moisture disappears, they can’t move, can’t feed, and effectively pause. A bone-dry pile can sit for months without much changing at all, especially through summer heat or a long dry spell, or if it’s built mostly from dry, woody material with nothing moist mixed in.

The squeeze test tells you where you stand: grab a handful from a few inches into the pile and squeeze it in your fist. If it crumbles apart and nothing holds together, and you can’t feel any dampness at all, it’s too dry. You’re aiming for the texture of a wrung-out sponge — damp enough to clump loosely, dry enough that no water comes out.

Rewetting properly

The mistake most people make is watering a dry heap the same way they’d water a dry pot plant: pour water on top and expect it to soak through. It doesn’t work like that with compost. A dry pile, especially one with a lot of straw, leaves, or cardboard in it, tends to shed water off the top rather than absorbing it, so watering from above often just runs off the sides while the core stays dry.

Instead, rewet as you turn. Break the pile apart with a fork, and water each layer as you go, so moisture gets worked into the material rather than just sitting on the surface. Add water gradually and recheck with the squeeze test as you go — it’s much easier to add more than to fix a pile you’ve suddenly made too wet. If you’re using a barrel or tumbler-style bin, the same principle applies: it’s easier to mix water in properly if you open it up and turn the contents rather than tipping water through the top.

Sizing and shade

A pile that’s too small dries out faster and struggles to hold heat or moisture, because there’s more surface area exposed to sun and wind relative to the amount of material inside. Aim for something in the region of a cubic metre — roughly a yard-cube, about waist height and as wide — since that gives enough mass to hold moisture and warmth in the centre. If your heap is smaller than that, consider whether you have room to build it up, or accept that a smaller pile will need more frequent attention.

Location matters too. A heap sitting in full sun all day, especially through a hot summer, will dry out much faster than one in dappled shade. If you can, position new heaps somewhere that gets some shelter from the harshest part of the day. For an existing heap you can’t move, a loose cover — enough to cut direct sun without sealing out air — can help it hold moisture longer between waterings.

After rewetting

Give it a few days after rewetting and turning before you expect to see real change — a properly moist pile with enough bulk should start to feel noticeably warmer in the centre as the organisms wake back up and start working again. If it’s still cool and inactive after a week of consistent moisture, check that you also have enough greens (nitrogen-rich material) mixed in, since a pile that’s all dry browns with nothing fresh added has little for the organisms to feed on even once it’s wet.
